Catalyst for Carbon Markets

CONTEXT

In April of 2022 atmospheric carbon crossed a perilous threshold of 420 ppm, the highest concentration in roughly 4 million years. As scientists rush to give guidance on how to keep warming below the critical 1.5° C increase over pre-industrial levels, there is growing consensus that carbon removal is central to any successful global carbon mitigation strategy.

With increasing public awareness of the need for climate action, there has been an explosion of startups looking to bring solutions to market. While net-zero commitments are surging in popularity, there are many unanswered questions around how and when those will translate into predictable buying behavior in carbon markets.

At present, minimal publicly available demand-side research exists. Major reports from the IPCC, TSVCM, Circular Carbon Network, etc. have been incredibly effective at informing interested parties on climate impacts, the need for carbon removal, funding, innovation, and policy recommendations to ensure action, however the voice of potential buyers has been noticeably absent. This study will be the first authoritative demand-side research paper focused on carbon removal markets. It will gain attention from carbon removal entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers and corporate leaders.

This study aims to be the first authoritative demand-side research paper focused on carbon removal markets. The goal is to thoughtfully segment buy-side interest to create a transparent and explainable demand forecast that will support market and policy development for carbon removal entrepreneurs, investors, policy makers and corporate leaders.
